Polypropylene (also known as PP) is a highly versatile type of plastic, used to manufacture a variety of items ranging from lunch boxes to bags! Here at Cotton Bag Co, we offer two options for polypropylene (PP) bags: non-woven and woven PP. Although these bags are quite similar, we have outlined the differences between woven and non-woven polypropylene bags in this blog.

What is the difference between woven and non-woven PP bags?

Non-woven and woven polypropylene bags are made from the same type of plastic resin, but they differ in how they are formed.

Woven polypropylene consists of strands of polypropylene plastic that are woven together, creating a durable material with great flexibility and strength. In contrast, non-woven polypropylene bags are bonded together instead of woven, fusing the fibers using heat and pressure.

While both woven and non-woven PP bags offer excellent durability, woven PP creates a stronger material that can withstand greater pressure and weight. This is why these bags are often used for heavy-duty applications like parcel collections or for carrying large weights without the risk of tearing.

Both types of PP bags are 100% recyclable, approaching bio-based plastics according to Greenpeace’s plastic pyramid. Additionally, an extra advantage is that this material is waterproof when finished with a laminated film, thereby protecting the contents from moisture.

Our printed non-woven and woven PP bags are available in a range of bright colors and can be dyed to match your design and branding. Your design can be printed over the entire surface of the polypropylene bag using reverse printing on a matte or glossy laminate.

Woven vs Non-Woven PP Bags

It is easy to determine whether a laminated bag you have is woven or non-woven PP. Simply look inside. If it has the typical checkered appearance of woven fabric, with strands crossing at right angles, then it is woven. If it has a uniformly textured appearance, then it is non-woven.

Not all plastics are created equal. Plastics can be as different from one another as wool and cotton. Of course, wool and cotton are both natural fibers, but one comes from animals and the other from a plant, and we all know how they feel during use.

Used to create everything from lunch boxes and pens to bottle caps and car parts, polypropylene is one of the most versatile plastics. In reality, there are two ways to transform polypropylene plastic into fabric.

Woven PP is made by pressing long chains of polypropylene molecules (called polymers) together to create a strand-like material, and then weaving it just like any other fabric. Woven PP has been used to make bags for various industrial uses, such as sandbags and bulk packaging for coffee, rice, and other dry items. It is clean, strong, and easy to sew, making it a natural choice for bags. Woven PP is usually laminated to keep the strands together as they can be slippery and easily come apart. Since PP can dry at a different rate than lamination, laminated PP tends to wrinkle slightly after a few months.

Non-woven PP is made by taking polypropylene polymers and spinning them using heat and air to turn them into fuzzy long strands, similar to cotton candy, and then pressing the strands together between heated rollers to create a flexible yet strong fabric with a texture similar to canvas. This texture allows the fabric to breathe, with an appearance and feel that is generally pleasant. The color and texture of non-woven PP can last for years. Multicolor screen printing is an easy process for graphics.

Woven PP is typically white and gains graphics through lamination, although some woven PP fabrics use colored strands to create a plaid pattern with clear lamination. Our bulk non-woven grocery bags can be produced in any imaginable solid color.
