Thank you very much for the clarification. It sounds like your cube BS will work well for me. I have placed it up very high on my "to buy" list.

Edit: Surplus Shed is out of stock for both 40mm and 30mm cubes though. I need 40mm cube. I searched US eBay with keywords "40mm coated beam splitter", but only found a $200 one.

When you said the cube BS eats bout the same amount of light as a polarizer (~1EV or more), you meant polarizer (s) that are not fully crossed, correct? Sorry, I don't have ND2 filter.

My light source output is >= 100w halogen and can output enough light for focusing under partially crossed polarizers. With crossed polarizers, it needs a small area to light up for focusing. For example, I had a Frustulia diatom under crossed pol+oblique at 40x 0.95 objective, its lines lighted up slightly and I was able to accurately obtain focus with that. Generally, I have more than enough light for crossed pol.

I am guessing high magnification crossed pol would need similar amount of light as darkfield, when lighted areas are about the same. I don't know about DIC.
